Seattle-area Women Offered NonInvasive Treatment for Symptomatic Uterine Fibroids
Focused Ultrasound Northwest now offers a new and completely noninvasive procedure to treat symptomatic uterine fibroids using the ExAblateŽ 2000 technology. ExAblate combines Magnetic Resonance Imaging with focused ultrasound to destroy the benign but often debilitating and painful tumors. The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis, and most women return to normal activities within 2-3 days. This facility is the first in the Pacific Northwest to offer the ExAblate treatment, and is located at Seattle Radiologists on the Swedish Medical Center campus in Seattle, WA. "ExAblate offers women a noninvasive option for the removal of painful uterine fibroids. Many women who would have chosen to suffer with the side effects of uterine fibroids in the past to avoid surgery now have a treatment option," said Eric Fassler, MD, an OB-Gyn physician trained in the cutting-edge treatment. "While the cost is comparable to a hysterectomy or uterine artery embolization, the patient is able to avoid the long convalescence period and potential post-operative complications that come with major surgery." What Patients Have to Say...
"The results have been incredible! My period, which for three or more years had lasted for 9 to 12 days at extremely heavy flow, causing me chronic anemia, now lasts 4 days and is normal. Also, I had grown accustomed to an intense feeling of pressure and difficult digestion, so much so that I never even reported them to my physician as issues. These problems are entirely gone.
Also, and perhaps this is unrelated, for about a year I was having pain in the backs of my legs when I would sit for long periods, such as on airplane flights. This too has entirely subsided. I began to feel amazing within a couple of weeks of the procedure." - J. Prince, CO

"I'd been having issues with fibroids cumulatively over about seven years, but for various reasons was not comfortable with surgical options. I heard about the focused ultrasound procedure from an ultrasound specialist and had it in mind for over a year. Finally, I decided to do something about it and looked into the procedure, but unfortunately was turned down as a candidate by the local radiologists for having too complicated a case.
I'd pretty much given up at this point, but put in a call to a few other (long-distance) facilities as a long shot. When Dr. Fassler called, hope returned! He was so comforting and reassured me that he and Dr. Peters had innovative techniques to handling a case such as mine. Fast forward to a month later and there I was, flying to Seattle to have the procedure done with Dr. Fassler.
I didn't even realize the extreme to which my symptoms had been bothering me until a day after I had the ExAblate procedure, when I'd already noticed improvement (I even noticed a surprising improvement in energy level). It's been a month now and I'm feeling even better. Dr. Fassler and his staff/associates are wonderful, caring people -- so positive an dencouraging throughout the whole experience. I would recommend ExAblate to anyone who is significantly affected by fibroids." - D. Shair, CA
